Pinch & Trapped Air

Students have already practiced creating pinch pots, both organic and geometric. They have also practiced how to join plastic clay together. The final lesson leading up to this project is to score and slip. To score is to scratch the surface of the clay (increasing the surface area of the join) before adding slip, liquid clay. This is similar to how one would sand wood with course sand paper before gluing 2 pieces together.
Students will create two pinch posts and literally trap air between to two pots. The trapped air will provide resistance as students reshape the ball into whatever form they desire. Larger sculptures can easily be modified to become a Piggy Bank.
