Intermediate Ceramics

Welcome to my intermediate ceramics class.
You can navigate through assignments and projects through the pull down menu above.

The goal of Ceramics 2 is revisit previous techniques with the hope of mastery of the basic techniques. Students will be given the choice of which techniques they wish to use in when planning their projects. The goal is that students will take this opportunity to specialize in their favorite techniques.

Assignments:
I know how precious your time is outside of class, so I try not to issue homework assignments. All assignments are given out  the week before the project starts. Students are expected to begin assignments in class and finish at home over the weekend if needed. Homework should typically consist of printing out images needed for visual reference. All assignments are directly related to class projects.

In addition to the standard school rules, I need students to follow some additional rules and guidelines while in the ceramics studio:

  • Do not throw anything while in the studio
  • No running or horseplay allowed
  • Be mindful of others, materials, and studio space

These can really be summed up with:
Respect yourself, others, the studio and the craft while in class.

Entire communities have sprung up around the act of "playing with mud" and I hope that each of my classes can continue this tradition. Beginning ceramics will have have a wide range of student with varying backgrounds, interests, skill levels, career and academic goals. Students will come from all grade levels, freshman - senior. I would ask that if you see another student struggling with a technique you are confident in, please offer your assistance!

Grading Policies:
Grades are weighted in class as follow:
50% Projects   (Finished Ware)
25% Assignments  (Practice and Major Project Planning)
15% Quizzes & Critiques  (Assessments and Guided Conversations)
10% Academic Responsibility   (Citizenship, Participation, Behavior,  and Extra Credit)

Academic Responsibility:
Every student earns 5 points per day for participating and each trimester is roughly 60 days long making a pool of 300 points. This is where Extra Credit is calculated, so a student could end up with more that 300 points. Problems in class take points away from this pool. Continued problems on the same day take additional points away cumulatively per offense. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 additional points, 3rd = 3 more points, etc. Additionally if a student leaves a messy table or group tools, the entire table loses 5 points.

Personal Electronics:
As much as I love having constant access to the internet right in my pocket; clay and electronics do not mix. Wet or dry, clay is abrasive and will scratch phone screens or accumulate in and damage ports, speakers, and microphones. Personal devices are not allowed out during class while ceramic materials are being used. There will be opportunities to use these devices, but not during project time.
*Music over headphones is allowed during project time*
