Themed Mug

The themed mug project requires students to have an understanding of how to handle slabs of clay. Students will work with the slabs as they did with coil. Once they have built an open, reinforced cylinder students take a step back to analyze the components of a mug.
Once the class has an understanding what traditionally makes a mug, they are asked to design a themed mug. Students are then showed examples of mugs that push the boundary between functional and decorative. Students are then asked to redesign their themed mug with the same whimsical style. Ultimately students are sent home to research and intended recipient. Learn about their interests, derive symbolism from these interests, design a final mug, and create it in class. Students are introduced to stretching, paddling, and image transfers on clay.
