Illuminated Letter

Picture
Students must now recall both soft and hard slab techniques to complete this project. They must explore various fonts, serif and sans serif. Once a letter is chosen students will sculpt and theme the letter based upon a word starting with that letter.

For example, the M here could be either "marsh or morass". The less precise the word is, the more options the student has when creating their theme.

Illuminated letters originated in medieval manuscripts, the beginning of book binding, and monastic translations of ancient Latin scrolls.
